Stoneart AS has been awarded Norway's official trademark - Made in Norway

Larvik 1. February 2025

Stoneart specializes in processing slate into customized products and solutions, and has been awarded the right to use Norway’s official trademark, Made in Norway. By being awarded this label, Stoneart demonstrates that they meet a number of criteria related to Norwegian value creation and origin, which will strengthen their position for further growth in both national and international markets.

The official origin mark is a request from the Norwegian business community itself, and the criteria for awarding it include that the product or solution is primarily developed or produced in Norway. The goal of such a mark is for consumers to be able to quickly and easily navigate among products and services that enhance and support Norwegian value creation.

It is with pride that we at Stoneart AS can say that we are now part of the Norwegian export team through Made in Norway, says Morten Lie – CEO of Stoneart AS. This recognition confirms our commitment to bringing Norwegian handmade slate products to the world. Our products, which combine Norwegian artisanal tradition and natural raw materials of the highest quality, represent Norway at its best.

Through Made in Norway, we are strengthening our focus on export. Our goal is to make Norwegian slate available to an international market that is increasingly demanding sustainable and authentic products. By highlighting our Norwegian origin, we can not only reach new customers, but also put Norway on the map as a supplier of first-class natural stone.

All value creation takes place here in Norway. Product development and production take place at our facility in Otta, and the raw materials are primarily sourced from local slate quarries in Oppdal, Dovre and Otta. This short-distance approach ensures high quality, environmentally friendly production and contributes to local value creation.

We see Made in Norway as a valuable resource for positioning ourselves internationally. The brand gives us a clear differentiation and strengthens our credibility as a supplier of sustainable, Norwegian quality products. Through this brand, we signal not only quality and origin, but also a responsibility to safeguard Norwegian craft traditions and natural resources.

Our export strategy is not just about selling products – it is about sharing a story. The story of Norwegian slate, created by nature over millions of years, refined by local craftsmanship, and brought to the market with a passion for sustainability and quality. Made in Norway gives us a tool to reinforce this story, build trust among our customers and create lasting value in new markets.

We are convinced that this investment will help to lift both Stoneart AS and Norwegian slate to new heights, while bringing pride in Norwegian craftsmanship to customers all over the world.

Stoneart AS was established in Larvik in 2005, as part of the strong natural stone community in Larvik built around Larvikitt – Norway’s national stone. In the early years, the focus was on offering new natural stone products locally through import from the international market. In 2010, the company began a process that led to an increased focus on Norwegian slate products in a national and eventually Nordic market.

In 2015, the company began a collaboration with a craft community in Otta that specialized in processing slate as a raw material for products and solutions. Custom-made floors and outdoor areas with norwegian slate became the company’s signature product and in the years to come, investments were made in technology, tools and facilities. As a training company, employees were recruited and training was provided in the slate profession in collaboration with the slate community around Otta. The business at Otta is today a wholly owned subsidiary – Stoneart Otta AS.

Stoneart has actively contributed to strengthening Norwegian slate’s position in the market through a number of prestigious projects. Participation in the TV program Eventyrlig Oppussing for six seasons and collaboration with Halvor Bakke and sports figures have created increased attention for Norwegian slate as a timeless and sustainable material. These initiatives have not only demonstrated the quality of the products, but also conveyed the story of Norwegian craftsmanship and tradition to a wide audience.

Stoneart sees Made in Norway as a natural extension of the company’s strategy. The brand provides a powerful platform to highlight Norwegian origins, while strengthening the message of sustainability and quality in an increasingly globalized world. Through this, not only is the continuation of Norwegian craftsmanship traditions ensured, but also contributes to promoting the use of Norwegian natural resources in a responsible manner.

Looking ahead, the company’s ambition is to continue developing innovative solutions that ensure high quality and environmental benefits, while building on its commitment to Norwegian slate. Made in Norway gives Stoneart a clear direction and a valuable tool for achieving its goals, both in the Norwegian and international markets.
